Did you know that there are seven caves in the 75 million year old sandstone cliffs between La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores Beach? Only one of these caves is accessible by foot unless it is during extreme minus tides. All seven of these caves can be visited by sea kayak. One of the caves, known as Sunny Jim Cave can be accessed through a tunnel and is the largest grotto in La Jolla Cove. The cave was named by Frank Baum after a 20's cartoon character used to promote breakfast cereal. There is a small fee to use the tunnel and there are 145 steep steps to get back out. The seven La Jolla sea caves are called Clam's Cave, Sunny Jim cave, Arch Cave, Sea Surprize, Shopping Cart, Little Sister and White Lady. The caves are listed from west to east. Clam's Cave is the only cave that is visible from land. It can be seen from Goldfish Point on Coast Boulevard. The best way to tour all seven caves is by kayak. Kayaking in La Jolla is fun for all ages and does not require any experience. It is best to join a guided tour before entering any of the caves. http://www.lajollacommunities.com/0064A3 Posted on August 18, 2007 09:51:40 by Marti Gellens
